Building Design Competition

Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup was one of six architectural teams that entered a design competition in January 2009. All six teams developed architectural concepts and models that were presented to a Design Competition Jury for review and selection.

We are grateful for the creativity and the skill each team brought to this endeavor. Each has contributed in many ways to the making of this building. They have broadened our understanding of what it means to design an iconic structure for a 21st century museum on the National Mall.

The team the jury selected brings together the combined strengths and talents of outstanding designers in the field of museum design and directs this dynamic energy toward the creation of a truly world‐class museum. Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup represents a union of architectural firms that have come together for a common purpose—the design and delivery of a signature new museum and the first green building on the National Mall, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
