Sustainability has been a primary consideration from the initial conception of the design through the development of the constituent components.
The museum is designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification. Sustainable elements will include solar hot water panels on the roof and a geothermal groundwater system.
When completed, the new National Museum of African American History and Culture will stand as a demonstration of best practices in environmental design. The building itself will be a tool for teaching the importance of environmental stewardship through design excellence.
