On Art and History

US Poet laureate Natasha Trethewey reads from her Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry collection Native Guard. The Native Guard was composed mostly of former slaves who enlisted in the Union Army and were assigned to guard Confederate prisoners of war. Her poetic interpretation of the Guard was inspired by childhood trips to a memorial to the Confederate prisoners and her realization that the service of the Native Guards has gone unrecognized. The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, led by Sharde Thomas of Sardis, Mississippi, opens and closes the program. Book signing follows.
