Commemorate and Celebrate Freedom






To kick off the countdown to its grand opening next fall, the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture presented this special live event to commemorate three important milestones in African American history:

  • 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 13th Amendment
  • 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War
  • 50th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act
