NMAAHC Welcome Center

Visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture Welcome Center to learn about our programs, exhibitions, collections, and the building design. The Center features a model of the National Mall, a video presentation, and kiosks to enroll in a museum membership or to try a quiz! And make sure to take a close-up look of the construction from a special viewing window. Trained volunteers will greet you for this self-guided experience!

For groups of 10 or more and/or if you have special needs, let us know your plans five working days prior to your visit, so that we can arrange for volunteer Information Desk Specialists to greet you and better accommodate you. American Sign Language accommodation requires two weeks advanced notice. Thank you! Welcome Center - Group Registration

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Welcome Center?

  • The National Museum of African American History and Culture Welcome Center is part of a comprehensive “visibility campaign.” Founding Director, Lonnie G. Bunch’s philosophy is that “this museum is open before we have a building.” This Center is a place for visitors to learn about the work of the museum as it is being built.

Why isn’t the Welcome Center opened longer hours like the museums?

  • While the staff is busy preparing the exhibitions and programs for the new museum, we are unable to operate a full volunteer program. The Welcome Center relies on volunteer support to opening.

I came to the Welcome Center, but it was closed…why is that?

  • The Welcome Center is closed due to lack of volunteer availability, severe inclement weather, or special meetings scheduled in the space.

I am planning to attend with my group. How many people can be in the Welcome
Center at one time?

  • Thirty-five (35) people are allowed in the Welcome Center at one time.

Do I have to register my group on this website just to drop-in?

  • No. Individual and small group drop-in visits of ten (10) or fewer, do not require registration. But bear in mind that other groups may also be visiting and the Center may be crowded, so it does help to let us know you are planning a visit.

I have registered on the website, can I bring my group of more than ten, if I don’t
hear from the staff?

  • No. Unless you receive a confirmation email from a staff member your visit has not been confirmed, and that due to demand we may not be able to accommodate everyone.
