Remembering the African American Family Day at the National Zoo in the 1930s
This summer, I read an article by Keith Alexander of the Washington Post, on African American Family Day at the National Zoo. I was very excited to read the article because it brought back so many wonderful memories of my childhood.
I am 80 years old, a third generation Washingtonian, and raised in LeDroit Park. My two sisters and I went with our mother and neighbors to the National Zoo every Easter Monday. At that time, it was not called "African American Family Celebration". We just went to the zoo to roll eggs and enjoy friends and have fun. It was years later that I learned that we could not go to the White House Easter Egg Roll and therefore, we rolled our eggs at the zoo.
After I read that article, I went to my family album and took out several pictures of my family and neighbors at the zoo in the 1930s. The pictures are not the best, but I would like to share them with you.
