Roughly one year ago, Jordan Brand and Michael Jordan announced a plan to donate $100 million over the next 10 years to organizations that promote racial equality, social justice and greater access to education. Today, the NBA icon’s namesake label revealed the destinations for its next three multiyear grants. Jordan Brand’s grant for The National Museum of African American History and Culture will go toward helping expand its Talking About Race web portal and Let’s Talk speaker series. “At the museum, we tell stories that are complex and meaningful, stories that have often been silenced from our past,” National Museum of African American History and Culture director Kevin Young said in a statement. “More than ever, we need those stories to highlight and emphasize the centrality of the African American experience to our nation’s history and healing.”

Filmed with his wife Nuffie, they document their home life in Long Beach, New York, and their travels throughout North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. Photochemical preservation was performed by Colorlab, which made new internegative prints of the silent films from the original 16mm color and black and white prints in 2016

The “Continuing The Dream” tour begins on January 17 with a private tour of the MLK Memorial and National Mall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ending at the MLK statue. Day two, from 2:35 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., you can explore the National Museum of African American History, the only museum in the world to highlight and illustrate the American story told by African Americans. A cocktail party and optional late-night event will follow.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture hosted the inaugural National Conversation on Race: Reckoning with Our Racial Past this month, the first in a series of conversations across the U.S. that will bring together diverse groups of individuals to discuss race and racism in historical, cultural and contemporary contexts.

Mary Elliott, curator of American slavery at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, said to The Guardian of Peter's time in the Louisiana Native Guard "That was important for him to be able to do that. His story is powerful because you can’t talk about slavery without talking about freedom. There’s always this desire for freedom. When people say, ‘Oh, another slave film’, ‘Oh, you’re going to talk about slavery, well, guess what? I’m also going to talk about freedom.”

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture recently hosted the inaugural National Conversation on Race: Reckoning with Our Racial Past. The event is the first in a series of conversations throughout the country designed to bring people together to discuss race and racism in a historical, cultural and contemporary context, Smithsonian said. The panel examined how events during the past two years have affected and shaped the ongoing legacy of race and racism in the U.S.

"Spirit in the Dark: Religion in Black Music, Activism, and Popular Culture," on display through November 2023, features the work of three acclaimed Natural State artists: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Rev. Al Green and Maya Angelou. In addition to artifacts, the exhibit includes 37 photographs from the Johnson Publishing Company archive, images that originally belonged to the publisher of Jet and Ebony magazines but are now jointly owned by the museum as well as the Getty Research Institute.
