National Museum of African American History and Culture Opens New Exhibition “Make Good the Promises: Reconstruction and Its Legacies”

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) will debut a new exhibition Sept. 24 exploring an often-overlooked period of history, the Reconstruction era. “Make Good the Promises: Reconstruction and Its Legacies,” featuring more than 175 objects, 300 images and 14 media programs, will be on view through Aug. 21, 2022, in the museum’s 4,300-square-foot Bank of America Special Exhibitions Gallery.

Breonna Taylor Portrait Featured in New Exhibition at National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) opens its latest exhibition, “Reckoning: Protest. Defiance. Resilience.,” in its newly redesigned Visual Art and the American Experience gallery Sept. 10. The Black Lives Matter movement, violence against African Americans and the role of art in depicting social protest movements are front and center in the exhibition.

Kevin Young, director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, released the following statement today, Aug. 24, on the passing of Clarence Avant, iconic music executive known as “The Godfather of Black Music.” Avant, also a film producer and entrepreneur, was one of the most powerful and influential figures in the entertainment industry, recognized for redefining Black entertainment and bringing greater visibility to Black artistry:

Statement on the Death of Staff Sgt. Homer Hogues

Our museum honors the life of Staff Sgt. Homer Hogues, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, who passed away this week at age 96. Born in Navasota, Texas, in 1927, Hogues enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1946 at Fort Sam Houston. He was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group, as an airplane and engine mechanic.

Education and Storytelling Are at the Center of Jordan Brand’s Next Grants for the Black Community

Roughly one year ago, Jordan Brand and Michael Jordan announced a plan to donate $100 million over the next 10 years to organizations that promote racial equality, social justice and greater access to education. Today, the NBA icon’s namesake label revealed the destinations for its next three multiyear grants. Jordan Brand’s grant for The National Museum of African American History and Culture will go toward helping expand its Talking About Race web portal and Let’s Talk speaker series. “At the museum, we tell stories that are complex and meaningful, stories that have often been silenced from our past,” National Museum of African American History and Culture director Kevin Young said in a statement. “More than ever, we need those stories to highlight and emphasize the centrality of the African American experience to our nation’s history and healing.”
