In April 2013, a team from the Museum traveled to Edisto Island, South Carolina, to oversee the move of this Point of Pines cabin to Washington, D.C. As the work crew carefully numbered each board and packed it for the trip north, they gathered with the descendants of both the enslaved and the slave holders to bear witness. This experience provided a forum that uncovered many of the silences that surround slavery, which are often not discussed in public or shared across racial lines.
