Related Exhibition: Double V The 30th Anniversary of the iconic Academy Award-winning film Glory that chronicled the heroism of the 54th Massachusetts during the American Civil War frames a discussion about the participation of black soldiers during World War I and the state of African Americans writ-large. Participating in the discussion will be NMAAHC (Guest) Associate Curator of Military History Krewasky Salter, Ph.D., Col., US Army Retired. He and others will refer to a clip from Glory to explore the connection between the Civil War and World War I that laid the foundation for the Red Summer of 1919 and the mindset of the New Negro to regain those civil rights achieved during the Reconstruction period, and lost in the Jim Crow era that followed.  Dr. Salter will also present a brief overview of an upcoming NMAAHC exhibition about The African American Experience in World War I that will commemorate the centennial of the Great War.
