The free event will be held at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 10:30am until 5pm. DC Home Movie Day 2017 offers an opportunity for the participants to have their home movies on otherwise inaccessible and/or obsolete film and video formats inspected by professional media conservators and screened for the public in the NMAAHC Family History Center. “America on the Move: Road Trips, Travel, and Family” is the DC Home Movie Day 2017 theme. This year we encourage the public to bring films documenting vacations, road trips, and travel, though all home movies are welcome. 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm film and VHS, Hi-8, Mini-DV, ¾-inch U-Matic videotape formats can all be screened at the museum. If you have home movies that you’ve never seen, or haven’t watched since childhood–don’t let your films decay! Take them to Home Movie Day! This year’s DC Home Movie Day will also feature “America on the Move” home movie highlights from the film and video collections of the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the DC Public Library. Note: films and videotapes: must contain only the participant’s own original material ormaterial for which he or she has full permission to show to the public at Home Move Day; must not violate any person’s privacy or other rights; and must not contain expletives or violence, pornography or blatantly sexually explicit content, or other content that is off-topic. Organizers reserve the expressed right to limit duration of screened film and videotape content, and to refuse screening of film and videotape content deemed inappropriate along these guidelines. Program: 10:30 am – 11:30 am: Public drop off of films and videotapes for inspections! [Family History Center, 2nd Floor, NMAAHC] 11:00 am – 1:00 pm: NMAAHC & DCPL home movie collection highlights, including travel footage from Cab Calloway, J. Max Bond, Reverend Solomon Sir Jones, the DC Punk Archive, DC Community Archives and more! [Oprah Winfrey Theatre, Concourse Level, NMAAHC] 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm: Screening of public’s home movies! [Family History Center, 2nd Floor, NMAAHC]
