As part of the Smithsonian's celebration of Women’s History Month, we are proud to participate in a special edition of Museum Day Live, which will focus on young women and girls of color. On March 12, the Smithsonian’s museums will offer a series of exciting programs designed to engage these young women, their peers and their families, and encourage them to explore the arts and sciences. As the Smithsonian’s 19th and only museum dedicated to the study of African American history and culture, NMAAHC will interpret what it means to be an African American woman in the 21st century. This panel will explore how African American women navigate the intersections of their identity, the historical implications and how it shapes current ideals about what it means to be a black woman. We will also examine how dominant culture and beauty norms impact the identity and lived experiences of African American women and girls. How does the media shape the identity development of African American women? How does one’s gender, orientation, class, etc., shape the way African American women move through society? Join us for a free reception immediately following the event in the One Plaza Lobby at the National Museum of American History. Music will be provided by the girl band duo, BOOMSCAT. Brittany Packnett Brittany Packnett (@MsPackyetti) is an educator & activist from St. Louis. She leads Teach For America – St. Louis, providing culturally responsive, rigorous educators to 20,000 low-income students. Committed to ending injustice, she sits on the Ferguson Commission, President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing & the founding team of Campaign Zero. Demetria Lucas D'Oyley Demetria Lucas D'Oyley is an award-winning author and journalist. As a writer, her work has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN.com, The Guardian, Essence, XO Jane and The Huffington Post. She is currently a contributing editor at TheRoot.com and the founder of SeeSomeWorld.com, where she obsessively writes about her travel adventures. Kimberly Drew Kimberly Drew (a.k.a. @museummammy) received her B.A. from Smith College in Art History and African American Studies. An avid lover of black culture, Drew first experienced the art world as an intern at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Drew is currently the Associate Online Community Producer at The Met. Celeste Beatty Celeste Beatty founded Harlem Brewing in the year 200 after first trying to build a brewery in Harlem during the 90s. After honing her brewing skills, she took a detour to launch Mojo Highway Brewing Company in 1998. Prior to that, she worked with a local Ben & Jerry's Partnership which helped inspire her social venture. Along the winding roads, she fell completely head over hops in love with making small batch home brews. The first brews were made in her studio apartment right across from Marcus Garvey Park..
