Generously supported by the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation, the CAAMA-NMAAHC symposium "Pictures with Purpose," will feature photography and visual culture scholars who will discuss the meaning and significance of early works by and about African American image makers. The program shares its name and coincides with the publication of the seventh volume in the Double Exposure photography book series on early photography.
Copies of the book will be available during the symposium and sold courtesy of Smithsonian Enterprises.
A live video stream of the event will be available on the Museum's Ustream Channel beginning at 10 a.m. on the day of the symposium.
