Join 2017 Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award winner Ava DuVernay, acclaimed director of Selma, and David Oyelowo, who starred as Martin Luther King Jr. in the film. Ms. DuVernay, who also directed 13th and created the TV series Queen Sugar, and Mr. Oyelowo will explore topics ranging from the cinematic interpretation historic and cultural milestones, to the entrepreneurship, creativity and strength of African American film within the larger filmmaking community. NMAAHC presents this program in collaboration with Smithsonian Magazine. 11/29 9:00 a.m. Update: We regret to inform you that due to circumstances beyond our control, Ms. Ava DuVernay will be unable to join us, in person, for the Smithsonian 2017 Ingenuity Festival program entitled Through the African American Lens: A Conversation between Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo, November 29, 1 PM at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Ms. DuVernay will instead participate in live conversation via a video streaming app. As planned, Mr. Oyelowo will be at the museum to discuss American history, culture and cinema as seen through an African American lens.
