About This Event

Learning Together: Black Birders Week
Designed for children ages 5 and up

Celebrate Black Birders Week 2023 with NMAAHC Kids! During this virtual program, we’ll learn all about migratory birds with special guest birdwatcher and environmental educator, Dara Miles Wilson. Together we’ll discover the importance of migration for all of Earth’s creatures - humans included! - and get to know migratory birds from the newly reopened Bird House at the Smithsonian National Zoo with a painting project.

This Learning Together program will be held via Zoom webinar and led by a museum educator. Registered guests will receive an email with Zoom information, a list of supplies needed and recommended resources on the Monday before the program.

About the Special Guest: Dara Miles Wilson is a bird lover, naturalist and a co-coordinator of Black Birders Week with the BlackAFinSTEM Collective. Dara is also an educator for the Anacostia Community Museum’s Environmental Justice Academy. Launching in this spring, the Environmental Justice Academy aims to promote environmental justice in communities of color by engaging the next generation in environmental awareness and advocacy. The program will provide spaces and opportunities for young women and non-binary youth of color to explore the intersections of community, justice, and environment.
