Teaching about Legacies in Stone: Reconstruction, Confederate Monuments, and Memory

This program is designed for middle and high school grade level classroom educators and will be held in person at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.Come join fellow educators to engage in conversation about the legacies of Reconstruction as they manifest in Confederate monuments and memorials. Educators will spend time in the Make Good the Promises: Reconstruction and its Legacies exhibition and will hear from Professor Karen L. Cox, historian and author of No Common Ground: Confederate Monuments and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice. Alongside NMAAHC educators, participants will discuss and investigate the ways that the national memory was created after the Civil War and how society is restructuring this national memory.
