    The July 28, 1854 issue of Frederick Douglass' Paper, a Rochester-based weekly newspaper published and edited by Frederick Douglass that centered on antislavery efforts and other social reform causes. The title [Frederick Douglass' Paper] is printed in large text across the top, just underneath the title are the issue details printed between two horizontal black lines: [Vol. VII, No. 32, ROCHESTER, N.Y. FRIDAY JULY 28, 1854., Whole Number 344]. The text of the paper is densely concentrated in seven vertical columns and there is both a vertical and horizontal crease through the center. An inscription of the name [Stephen Reeves] is written in black ink at the top right corner of the front page. The last page contains a large advertisement: "Call for a National Emigration Convention of Colored Men to be held in Cleveland Ohio" and is signed in print by Martin R. Delany.

    Paperback first French edition of "La Croisade de Lee Gordon" [Lonely Crusade] with a book jacket and a preface by Richard Wright. The cover of the book jacket shows a stylized graphic of a man and woman in the center and the purple silhouette of a woman in the upper right corner. The colors of the cover are black, purple, yellow, and white. At the top, there is black text which reads [CHESTER HIMES] and in the center over top of the figures is printed yellow text [LA CROISADE / DE LEE GORDON] with [PRÉFACE DE RICHARD WRIGHT] underneath in smaller, white text. The bottom of the cover has [CORRÊA] in half yellow and black text. The spine is white with purple and yellow horizontal bars, the author's name, title, and publisher. The back of the book jacket lists other works by the publisher, in French, inside of purple and yellow borders. The book jacket flaps have information about the author and a summary of the book. The reverse of the book jacket is blank. The book has a deckle edge. The paperback cover is yellow and has printed text with the title, author, and preface contributor on the cover in black. Below in white is [LE CHEMIN DE LA VIE] and [COLLECTION DIRIGÉE PAR MAURICE NADEAU / CORRÊA] in black. There is a list of other works by the publisher in French on the back cover of the book. There is a handwritten inscription on the half title page.

Paper book cover is burgundy with red and blue type, reading [The warmly personal story of America's favorite gospel singer/Mahalia Jackson/ with Evan McLeod Wylie/Movin' on up]. Front cover has a depiction of Mahalia Jackson in a white short sleeve shirt, with white beads sewn in flower patterns. Jackson holds her hands clasped in front of her chest, looking up towards her right. The reverse of the paper book cover is white with burgundy type and contains a series of excerpted passages from the autobiography. The text begins thus: [MAHALIA JACKSON tells of her life and times.../"I don't believe in God myself," a reporter told me, "but when you/sing it gives me goose pimples." "That's not goose pimples," I/told him. "That's your soul speaking and you don't even know/ it's there!"]. Mahalia Jackson signed the first page (opposite interior cover) in blue ink, reading [May the Love of God keep/you always in Christ/Mahalia Jackson] in script.     A first edition, hardcover book with dust jacket, Five Plays by Ed Bullins. The dust jacket features a full-page black-and-white photograph of Ed Bullins in front of the New Lafayette Theater. Bullins is seen from the waist up, facing the camera, wearing a black long sleeve shirt, unbuttoned at the neck. He is also wearing a thick, chain with large pendant around his neck. Behind his proper left shoulder is the sign for the theater with a black and white stylized face above black text that reads [THE NeW / LaFaYeTTE / THEaTRe]. Behind his proper right shoulder is a pair of glass doors. The lower half of the cover features the book title in red stylized text written over Bullin's shirt, [FIVE PLAYS / BY ED / BULLINS]. Along the bottom edge of the front cover in white text is [WINNER OF THE 1968 VERNON RICE AWARD]. The spine of the dust jacket is white with black, narrow, text [FIVE PLAYS BY ED BULLINS / BOBBS-MERRILL]. The back cover of the dust jacket is white with black text that features two Bullins’ play reviews by Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly. The interior front and back flaps of the dust jacket feature a review of Bullins’ plays and short biography written by Black Theatre. The book has a black cloth binding. The exterior spine of the book is embossed with metallic red text that spans the entire length of the spine, [FIVE PLAYS BY ED BULLINS / BOBBS-MERRILL]. Both the front and back covers of the book are blank. The book features five plays include Goin’ a Buffalo; In the Wine Time; A Son, Come Home; The Electronic Nigger; Clara’s Ole Man. The title pages for each play are preceded by a black-and-white image from a live performance of that play. The book is two hundred and eighty-two (282) pages long. There are inscriptions in ink and pencil on the front free endpaper.
