This book consists of 12 colored wood-block images of Japanese insects and their host plants, printed on folded leaves pasted together at the fore-edges in orihon (accordion) style. When fully opened, the volume measures approximately 280 cm. in width.
First published in 1820, in the Edo period, with a poetic text accompanying the images. Later editions, including this one, often omitted the text except for a brief colophon in Japanese.
This ed., with a printed English-language cover title, was probably issued during the late Meiji period (early 20th century) for the tourist or export trade.
