Summary
First part of the program looks at the ways in which the culture and history of the French colonies have been represented to the western European audience since the turn of the nineteenth century. It looks at the exhibits of the French colonies of the Paris Exhibition of 1900. The program focuses on the representations of two African colonies, Dahomey and Algeria. The later part of the program considers how forms of ethnographical display and categorization have been developed in the organization of the Rockefeller Collection in the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Mankind.
