    Description
The notebooks and maps document paleontological and geological fieldwork of August Foerste, 1887 - 1933. Much of it relates to his work during summer vacations as part in geological surveys in Indiana, 1896, 1897, and 1899; as well as work he completed in Ohio, 1908 and 1919; Kentucky, 1904-1912; and Canada, 1911-1912. Some works are undated. Notebooks frequently include geological sections with notes, hand drawn illustrations of specimens, and hand drawn maps to observed locations, as well as sometimes notations of sections have been copied. Sometimes location information can be unclear, focusing on extremely specific location details like names of local land owners.Sites also include Michigan, New Jersey, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.|Foerste's study of fossils centered on three areas: Ohio Valley Silurian stratigraphy and paleontology; Ordovician fossils of the United States and Canada; and lower Paleozoic cephalopods, particularly those of the Ozarkian-Canadian system with Edward Oscar Ulrich of the US National Museum.
