- Description
- The fourth issue of BLK magazine, published March 1989. It is printed in black and white and the cover features an image of adult film performer Randy Cochran. Cochran sits facing the camera, smiling as he looks directly into it. He wears a light-colored suit with a stripped necktie. Tree branches can be seen in the background behind him. Close to the bottom of the page, the magazine’s logo [BLK] is printed in large, bold, uppercase white letters, surrounded by a solid black rectangle. Below the letters (within the box), the issue number and date appear [Number 4, March 1989]. There are 23 pages in total, with articles, advertisements, classifieds, black and white photographs, and cartoon illustrations originally from Ebony Magazine with new captions written by BLK.
- The issue opens with a [Letters to the Editor] section, followed by a calendar of the month's events. - A 72-page pamphlet entitled The American Negro Writer and His Roots. The cover is brown with black print and the lower left quadrant includes a yellow horizontal line motif. The title [THE AMERICAN / NEGRO WRITER / AND HIS ROOTS] is written in large text in the lower left corner. Below this, small italic left-justified text reads [Selected Papers from / the First Conference of Negro Writers / March, 1959]. The lower edge has centered black text reads [American Society of African Culture]. The pamphlet contains eleven essays by Saunders Redding, Samuel W. Allen, John Henrik Clarke, Julian Mayfield, Arthur Davis, Langston Hughes, William Branch, Arna Bontemps, Loften Mitchell, Sarah E. Wright, and John Oliver Killens. These essays are divided into five sections and it features photographs of selected authors.

- Playbill magazine (2015.61.14.1), April 2014, featuring the play, "A Raisin in the Sun" written by Lorraine Hansberry, directed by Kenny Leon, starring Denzel Washington, LaTanya Richardson, and Sophie Okonedo, and performed at the Ethel Barrymore Theater, New York 2014. The top third of the cover is the masthead, a yellow rectangular field with black type with the magazine's title, [PLAYBILL ®] above the text [ETHEL BARRYMORE THEATER]. Below the masthead and outlined with a Kente cloth border, is a black-and-white image tinted blue of a young boy on a street. The boy walks past a row of receding buildings seen in the upper right quadrant to the upper left. The boy is pictured on the right side near the lower corner. He holds something to his mouth in his proper left hand and holds books under his proper right arm. Behind him, centered in the image, is a woman wearing a long coat, carrying an umbrella on her proper left arm. Overlaying the image is a narrow, a Kente cloth outline of a circle. In the lower third of the image, justified on the left side, is orange text with the title of the play, which is also the main coverline, [a RAISIN / in the SUN]. Below the image at the bottom is a small yellow rectangle with a website in black text. The back cover features an ad for Gucci cologne. The magazine has fifty-two (52) pages.
- A tri-folded pamphlet of the essay "Sweet Lorraine" (2015.61.14.2) about Lorraine Hansberry, written by James Baldwin. Printed on semi-gloss paper, the pamphlet is navy blue with stylized, Kente cloth borders throughout. On the front in the upper right corner is a circular, black-and-white image of Lorraine Hansberry. Overlapping the image is white block text [SWEET / LORRAINE]. Below the title is the byline in orange text, [BY JAMES BALDWIN] followed by a line of white text that reads [THAT'S THEY WAY I ALWAYS FELT ABOUT YOU, AND SO / I WON'T APOLOGIZE FOR CALLING HER THAT NOW.]. Below the text and byline is the beginning of Baldwin's essay in white text. The inside of the pamphlet the essay continues and features four (4) circular black and white images of cityscapes. In the lower left corner of the back page is an additional black-and-white image of Hansberry. Above and around the image are the final paragraphs of the essay.

- A lobby card for the film A Raisin in the Sun. The card consists of a large tinted film still depicting a scene with all of the Younger family characters in the film: Sidney Poitier as Walter Lee Younger, Ruby Dee as Ruth Younger, Claudia McNeil as Lena Younger, Diana Sands as Beneatha Younger and Stephen Perry as Travis Younger. The family is pictured outdoors, gathered around McNeil, who is seated and opening a gift. In the bottom left corner is a round orange ring with a white center. The drawing depicts a man with hair cropped short standing with his hands in his pants pockets. He wears a single-breasted black, tan, and red plaid jacket over a gray sweater vest, a white dress shirt, and a bright red tie. His khaki-colored pants are cuffed at the hem over his black oxford shoes. The man and his clothing are outlined in graphite with watercolor and unidentified pigment shading. The stamp for the United Scenic Artists Local 829 is in black ink in the lower right facing corner, with Dearing's signature in black ink below the stamp. The reverse is blank.
