    Description
    A 16mm release print of the feature film Dirty Gertie from Harlem U.S.A. It consists of two reels of positive 16mm acetate film (a) and (b), is in black and white and contains sound. A single row of perforations runs along one edge of each film strip, while a variable-area, optical-sound (audio on film) track runs along the other.
    The film tells the story of Gertie LaRue, a Harlem nightclub dancer who leaves her boyfriend and relocates to the fictitious island of “Rinidad.” Her arrival is marked by a reception at the Paradise Hotel, hosted by the hotel’s proprietor Mr. Diamond Joe. Gertie is offered the hotel’s “best room,” the bridal room. The film ends with Gertie’s ex-boyfriend, Al, breaking into her room in the night.

    Description
    A 148-page hardbound book entitled Slavery in the West Indies. The entire cover is made of a brown woven material. The front and back covers are blank. The spine reads [SLAVERY IN THE WEST INDIES] vertically and includes the Negro Universities Publishing logo at the bottom. All text on the spine is gold. The original publication of this volume was in 1823. This book was reprinted in 1969 by Negro Universities Press, a division of Greenwood Publishing Press.
    This book is composed of two separate essays compiled into one volume, as noted on the Contents page. The first essay is “An Appeal to the Religion, Justice, and Humanity of the Inhabitants of the British Empire, in Behalf of the Negro Slaves in the West Indies” written by William Wilberforce. The second essay is “Negro Slavery ; Or, a View of Some of the More Prominent Features of That State of Society, as It Exists in the United States of America and in the Colonies of the West Indies, especially Jamaica” by Zachary Macaulay.
    There are no inscriptions or signatures anywhere on the object.

    The slave ship Diligente was engaged in the illegal slave trade when it was seized in 1838. A lieutenant in the British Royal Navy painted this scene from the ship. He captured the trauma of the Middle Passage in images of malnutrition and overcrowding.

    Description
    Meeting minutes from the Detroit/Nassau group of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The white paper has black printed text. The document has sections for [Minutes of Meetings], [Purpose of Meeting] and [Discussion]. There is a letter from chairman Wendell Campbell about the 1971 AIA convention. The letter gives background about meetings of minority architects at conventions in Detroit and Nassau and planning for a future meeting in Chicago. The reverse of the printed documents is blank.

    Caption
    This is a Bahamian bill of sale for two enslaved individuals, Trim and Flora. The seller, James Stevens notes that the buyer, John Addison will benefit from Flora’s future “increase,” a term enslavers used to value unborn children of slaves.
    Description
    A partially typed, partially handwritten Bahamian bill of sale for [a certain negroe man slave named Trim] and a [negroe woman slave named Flora]. Trim and Flora were sold to John Addison from J. James Stevens on February 8, 1799 on the Bahamian Island of Nassau. The middle of the bill includes language on [the future issue and increase] of Flora. The bottom is signed by witnesses Dan Sutherland, John Stevens and the seller, James Stevens.
    On the upper portion of the back of the document, James Stevens has confirmed that John Addison received the document on February 8th 1799 and [John Addison note of hand for the within payable in six weeks]. James Stevens has signed his name below this statement.
    The lower portion of the back of the document has a short summary of the sale of Trim and Flora by James Stevens to John Addison for 220 British pounds.
    The document has four distinct horizontal crease lines showing it has been folded into fourths. The outer edges of the fourths are torn and deteriorating.
