    Description
    Carte-de-visite of Emma V. Brown shown in half portrait. Her body faces the camera but her head is turned one quarter to her right and she looks off frame. Her hair is gathered loosely and in long ringlets that hang down behind her head. She wears a dark bodice with a ruffled front and collar with a white ruffled lace standing collar under it. A circular brooch is pinned at her center front neck. She wears circular dangling earrings. The bottom portion of the image is purposefully faded in the popular style of the time.
    Handwritten in ink below the photograph on the mount is the text, "Emma V. Brown / my pupil & friend". There is a mark for M.P & A.I. Rice on the back of the photograph.
    The photograph is housed in the album 2017.30. The album page has a triple-lined, gold border framing the print. Handwritten in graphite inside the bottom border of the printed frame of the album page is the text "E. V. Brown" and at the bottom left of the album page is the text "M P Rice / 1217 Washington DC".

Her right hand resting on the back of a carved Gothic revival style side chair. Her left hand is at her side and she is holding a black beaver hat with a heavily embellished ruffled lace hat band. Her hair is parted at the center and braided on the sides extending to the nape of her neck. Her cheeks and lips are tinted pink. She wears a dark colored dress and a dark cloak over it. A chatelaine is pinned at her front neck with a long chain and a long ribbon extending from it, though the objects at the ends are not visible and appear to be tucked into her waist or under her cloak.
    A mark for Henry Ulke is printed on the back of the photograph.
    The photograph is housed in the album 2017.30. The album page has a triple-lined, gold border framing the print. Handwritten in graphite inside the bottom border of the printed frame of the album page is the text "Carrie N. Lacy".     Description
    Carte-de-visite of a young woman and two children. The woman is pictured seated in the center of the image, flanked by two young girls standing next to her. The woman is wearing a long, dot-patterned dress with bow at the collar. Her proper right arm is around the shoulders of the youngest girl, who stands with her proper left hand on the woman's knee, gripping her the fabric of her dress. The girl on the right is wearing a dark, gingham long-sleeved dress and heavy black shoes with her hair plaited back. The younger girl on the left is wearing a plaid long-sleeved dress, visible white petticoat, white socks, and black shoes, her hair also plaited. On the back of the photograph is the photographer’s stamp with and image of the United States Capitol building at center. The stamp reads “ALEX. GARDNER./ Photographer to the Army of the Potomac / GALLERIES / 511 Seventh Street and 332 Pennsylvania Av. / Published by / Philp & Solomons, / Washington, D.C.” Below the photographer’s stamp is a 2 cent George Washington stamp surrounded with an ornate border.

    Description
    This carte-de-visite depicts the Smithsonian Castle building photographed showing a southwest view. The building is surrounded by rocky and grassy soil with one small bare-branched tree in the left foreground. Construction work is being performed on the building. Two (2) small wooden structures can be seen in front of the building, one at the right foreground and one just right of the center foreground. Typed in red ink on the card mount below the photograph is the text "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1866, by G. D. Wakely, Washington, D. C." The reverse side of the carte-de-visite is blank.

She is looking directly at the camera. Alsop is wearing a dark colored, high neck dress with buttons from neck to waist and a belt with oval buckle cinching the pleated waist. There is a light colored trim at the collar and cuffs. The photograph has retouching present in Alsop's eyes and pink hand coloring on her lips and cheeks.
    There is an inscription handwritten in graphite along the lower edge of the print, which reads "Margaret Alsop."
    There is a mark for Alexander Gardner Galleries and Philip & Solomons Publishers on the back of the photograph.
