- Description
- A broadside advertising a court-ordered slave of enslaved persons at the courthouse in Charleston, South Carolina, on January 10, 1859. The paper is printed in black ink with hand-written annotations along columns printed with the first names and ages of ninety-nine [99] enslaved men, women, and children. The names are numbered and grouped together into subsets. Large printed text at top reads, [UNDER DECREE IN EQUITY. / SANDERS vs. SANDERS, et al]. The handwritten notations make remarks like "healthy," "very fine," "sold privately," "dead," "shot in leg," "breeding," "leg broke," "lost a toe," "white," and "mostly white." The names listed are as follows:

- A manuscript titled “The Tulsa Race Riot and Three of Its Victims” by B. C. Franklin. The unpublished manuscript consists of ten pages written in black type on yellowed paper. It was written on August 22, 1931, ten years after the Tulsa Race Massacre and recounts the events of the massacre as witnessed by the author, including an account of Franklin witnessing three men being killed by the mob. The manuscript is signed by B.C. Franklin on the last page.

- This journal provides insight into the spiritual and intellectual life of Dr. Ionia Rollin Whipper, doctor and social reformer. A 1903 graduate of Howard Medical School, Dr. Whipper was an obstetrician working in the Maternity Ward of Freedmen's Hospital. She encountered many teenage mothers in her work, mentoring them through their pregnancies and caring for their infants. With a small group of women from the community of her church, AME St. Luke's, Whipper raised money to open a home for unwed pregnant girls. In 1931, the Ionia R. Whipper Home for Unwed Mothers opened in Northeast Washington, DC and remained the only maternity home for black women in the Washington area for decades.

Each page is covered with inspirational quotes about religion and life. Each thought or sentence is divided by a handdrawn line. Along with the quotes are lists of attendees at Meetings. There is a break halfway through with blank pages, then the journal continues until the last page. On the inner back cover, printed in gold ink, is the manufacturer's information. - Frances Rollin and her four sisters, Charlotte, (Chair of the SC Woman Suffrage Association), Katherine, Louise, and Florence were 19th century suffragettes who actively advocated for equal rights for women. During Reconstruction, they operated a successful political salon in Columbia, SC where blacks, whites, women and men discussed civil, social and political rights for all Americans.
- Frances Anne Rollin was also a writer and the author of Life and Public Services of Martin R. Delany which upon appearing in 1868 became the first full-length biography written by an African American. Rollin also kept a diary in 1868, making it the earliest known diary by a southern black woman.
- Major Martin Delany, the highest ranking black in the military, was so impressed by the young teacher that he commissioned her to write his biography. Rollin traveled to Boston to write and to seek a publisher. Her account describes her writing experience as well as her meetings with notable abolitionists and luminaries of the Civil War era and notes Delany’s financial challenges once the Civil War ended.
- Returning to South Carolina in 1868, Frances Rollin was employed by a Pennsylvania-born black attorney, William J. Whipper, who had been recently elected to the South Carolina Legislature. Rollin and Whipper married a few months later.
- Rollin continued her diary during their brief courtship and first year of marriage. The diary allowed a rare glimpse into the social life of Columbia, the South Carolina capital, and recorded the anti-black, anti-Republican violence then ongoing in the state during Reconstruction.
- Description
- Personal diary of Frances Anne Rollin, written during the year 1868. The content of the diary covers the publication of Rollin's book, her courtship and first year of marriage to William J. Whipper, member of the South Carolina state legislature, and life in Reconstruction-era Columbia, South Carolina. The diary is wrapped in black leather with a flap extension on the right that slips inside a strap on the body of the book. On top of the strap is the manufacture's mark in gold that is a circular shape with a starburst design on top. Underneath is the text, [DIARY / 1868]. The inside cover of the diary has many inscriptions in pencil. The text begins with the numbers, [62 / 135.] Underneath reads, [F. Rollin / 16 Blossom [illegible] / Boston / Mass]. On the right cover is a list of objects including the diary and their prices listed on the left with a total of 3.75. Another math equation below lists more objects and ends with 1.90.
- The inside title page is covered in decorative floral and leaf scroll work. The title reads, [ILLUMINATED / DIARY / for / 1868.]. Underneath is an illustrated image of the sea with a mast ship. The publisher below reads, [PUBLISHED BY / TAGGARD & THOMPSON, No. 29 CORNHILL, / BOSTON.] The diary begins with a calendar, differences in time in each state and city, postage information, and eclipses. There are gaps in entries between July 13-26, October 20-21, November 19-January 1, 1869. After the diary dates is a page of [MEMORANDA.] with a list of objects bought and their prices. Following are pages devoted to [CASH ACCOUNT] by month. The back cover has an inscription of two quotes from R. Waldo Emerson, but the quotes are mostly illegible as the graphite has faded. Below the quotes are two more math equations.

- This song program is a bifolio sheet with text and images on all four pages. The front page has text at the top that reads "Slave Songs of the South by the Hampton Colored Students." The page is divided into three sections of text. The middle section is titled "PROGRAMME -Part First” and the last section "PART SECOND." Under first and second parts are numbered lists of songs, some with notations. The entire text is surrounded by a thin line border with decorative corners. The two inside pages are covered with printed text in the form of handwritten script. The back page has text at the top that reads "HAMPTON / Normal and Agricultural Institute." Underneath is a lithographed image of a large building with the caption "VIRGINIA HALL- Now being erected."

At the end of the 1997 season, Robinson retired after coaching Grambling for fifty-six years with an overall record of 408 wins (the second most in NCAA Division I history), 165 losses, and 15 ties.

- Time vol. 91 no. 21 from May 24, 1968. The front cover features a color cartoon portrait of Senator Robert Kennedy, set against a red background. Time magazine commissioned Roy Lichtenstein to produce the print for this issue. Kennedy is depicted from the shoulders up, speaking in front of five (5) microphones. Behind him is a red-white-and-blue background and Kennedy is outlined by a bright yellow burst of light that also falls on one side of his face. The portrait is bordered with a narrow white frame. In the bottom right corner of the portrait is the associated cover line printed in black text that reads, [BOBBY / KENNEDY]. Just below, printed in the white frame, is the artist’s name printed in black, stylized, block text that reads [ROY LICHTENSTEIN]. - This folio continuity script for "Cotton Comes to Harlem" is from the 1970 film based on the Chester Himes' novel of the same name. The pages are mimeographed leaves bound in a black pressboard binder with a metal prong clasp. The front cover has a central white rectangular label with rounded edges that reads [COTTON COMES TO HARLEM / United Artists - 1970 / A.Perl, O.Davis/O.Davis]. There is an adhesive label on the upper spine that reads [COTTON COMES TO HARLEM]. The reverse of the binder has two anchoring holes for the interior metal prong. The script is held to the binder with a metal prong on the center left side and the 143 pages are connected together by a separate top center metal clasp.

Presentation/Owner information page is filled out with black pen, and reads "This Bible was presented to / Rev. Dr. John J. Koger / on the 4th day of November 1979 / at New Bethany Baptist Church / by William H. Mathis / On the occasion of / 44th Anniversary of church". A chunk of pages (573-586) are paper clipped together. A couple scraps of paper with handwritten notes are stuck between pages.
