The Slave Wrecks Project, with local partner the Museu da Ilha de Mocambique and global partners National Park Service, George Washington University, and Eduardo Mondolane University are undertaking extensive research and field work on the Ilha de Mocambique and its importance in the global slave trade as a major site of Portuguese slave trading in the Indian Ocean. Ongoing work includes ethnographic and oral history collection in relationship to the slave ship Saõ José Paquete D’Afrique, terrestrial and archaeological work on and around the island, and capacity building and community outreach with the Museu da Ilha de Mocambique.
