neither have any general reports of lawlessness upon blacks by parties of white men, as heretofore, reached me. I attribute the improved state of affairs in this respect to the discountenance given to such proceedings by the influential citizens in generally. Two complaints for wages due were made, which were settled to the apparent satisfaction of all parties concerned, without recourse to law. In two other cases of the same nature, which could not thus be settled, the complainants refused to prosecute. Crops are good and no reason exists why the freedmen should not be well supplied for the coming winter.
X [[Left margin]] The school at Humboldt has now been in progress three months, with very satisfactory results. It will be continued until Christmas without intermission. At Trenton the School Committee are only waiting to secure the building erected for the freedmen for Church and school purposes to establish a "Free School" under the provisions of the School Law of the State.
No other reports, other than general, have reached me from Dyer County. These reports only relate to crops and labor, which are favorable.
X [[Left margin]] The school at Dyersburg closes the last of this month, for what length of time is not stated.
X [[Left margin]] Obion County. No reports other than relative to the school of Union City, have been made. The school at that place has been reopened with an attendance of 41 pupils. It is expected the school will be supported by state aid.
Haywood Co. Numerous complaints having reached one of outrages having been committed upon the freedmen of Haywood County. I ordered Lieut. W.A. Miller 25" U.S. Infantry, on duty at this office, to proceed to
