The Power of the Written Word: NMAAHC Teen Writing & Literature Institute will expose teen participants to classic and modern pieces of African American literature, hone critical literature analysis and strengthen writing skills as teens respond to discussion questions.
Facilitated by classroom teachers, students will participate in discussion, complete writing assignments and explore museum experiences which investigate themes within the chosen work and the larger American story.
For the 2019 Summer Institute the chosen work of literature is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
Designed for rising 10th-12th grade students, students will be expected to complete some short reading and reflection assignments at home as well as abide by a code of conduct while in the institute. Participants will receive the chosen work of literature as well as other supporting resources.
