Chicago

Event Type: Signature Event
Organized by: 84th and Wabash Block Club
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Description:

The 84th and Wabash Block Club of Chicago, Illinois are neighbors of the illustrious Mrs. Mamie Till-Mobley, mother of Emmitt Till. She resided on our block for over 40 years before her passing in 2003. We are proud to be celebrating this historic moment in several ways.
--The Museum is recognizing the Till tragedy with an exhibit, and a delegation of members from our community plan to attend the Grand Opening festivities to honor Emmitt, as well as Mrs. Till-Mobley and her contributions to the Civil Rights cause.
--During her life we celebrated her. And now this year, to commemorate the Museum opening, we have again acknowledged her and her connection to this significant monument housed in our nation's capital by making this the focus of our 20th annual Block Party held on August 13, 2016. We distributed literature about NMAAHC and encouraged attendees to extend support, participate in the Grand Opening and/or to visit the Museum as a testament to her and other black heroes.
--Our block has been active, in collaboration with our Alderman's office, in enlightening the community about this awesome venue representing all aspects of our cultural roots. We emphasize the need for black communities throughout the city to broaden their support of this Museum. We plan to continue this commitment long after the celebrations are over.
