Memories of Peter Davy
The Museum, along with Google Arts & Culture, has curated a new, online exhibition, A Look at the Black Fashion Museum Collection and Designer Peter Davy that honors the lives and work of Lois K. Alexander-Lane, founder of the Black Fashion Museum and fashion designer Peter Davy. Lane's life-long efforts to document and preserve the contributions of black people to the world of fashion continue to be a monumental achievement while Davy's designs represent a major component within the Museum's fashion collection.
Though he was a respected fashion designer, little is known about Peter Davy. Born in Kingstown, St. Vincent, Davy created carnival costumes in St. Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago before moving to New York City to join the city's fashion scene in the 1980s. In 1994, The Black Fashion Museum held a retrospective of his work, four years after his death. In 2007, The Black Fashion Museum donated its entire collection to Museum, including over a dozen stunning, beaded gowns created by Davy.
