This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860.
Description
This handwritten, single page document is a tax account and payment receipt for Edward Rouzee for the year 1825.The taxable property is listed as "454 acres and 293 acres of land, 27 slaves, 10 horses, and 2 gigs, 25 levies. The total amount owed is fifty-four (54) dollars and forty-nine (49) cents. The document is signed at the bottom right by Thomas Matthews. On the back is a note with the amount and the date October 23, 1825. Both sides are in black ink. The bottom edge of the paper is torn unevenly.
