This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860.
Description
This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by Edward Rouzee to the Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1840. The taxable property is listed as "26 slaves, 13 horses, and Carriage," four hundred and fifteen and one quarter (415 1/4), eighty-one and one quarter (81 1/4), two hundred ninety seven and one quarter (297 1/4) and one hundred and six (106) acres of land. The itemized account of taxes owed is written in light blue ink. Below it is a receipt for payment received on October 23, 1840 and signed by Robert Hill written in a darker blue ink. There are calculations written in graphite at the bottom of the document and further notes in blue and brown ink and calculations in graphite on the reverse.
