- Description
- A bed frame from the Rock Rest Tourist Home. The disassembled bed has several parts that include: a headboard (2011.12.14a), footboard (2011.12.14b), right and left side rails (2011.12.14cd), and five bed slats (2011.12.14e-i). The headboard, footboard, and siderails are constructed from a dark tone, reddish, wood with a polished mahogany veneer. The bed slats are made from partially finished natural wood. The headboard is a carved, rectangular shaped with semicircular cut outs at the top two corners. Across the top edge is a band of carved beads. It is connected at the bottom corners to two turned bedposts. The crossbar below is wide, plain, and flat. The footboard is a carved, bow shape with turned posts, and a turned, horizontal cross rail. The bedposts are taller than the headboard and footboard and end in finials. Stamped on the back of the headboard is black text that reads [NO. H. 3524. BED. 4/6/XX. / MAHOG. VENEER 2/17/48]. The two cross rails have a plain, polished front surface and an unvarnished back. Each rail has two metal hooks on each end. The five bed slats are long rectangular planks. They are also flat with a narrow thickness and vary slightly in widths. Each slat has a rough side and a smooth side.
