2011.52.1a: Steps to Good English by Inez M. Ahles and Mary Lawlor. The seventh-grade level textbook/workbook is a brown, softcover book with a fabric tape spine. The front cover features a small graphic of a globe, an open book, and a feathered quill and inkwell inside a black rectangular box. Above is the title of the book in black and light-colored text that reads [STEPS TO GOOD / ENGLISH / Inez M. Ahles / and / Mary Lawler]. Below the graphic, are stepped green boxes resembling book spines with black text that reads [TESTS / SPELLING / LIBRARY INSTRUCTION / APPLIED GRAMMAR / WRITTEN EXPRESSION / VOCABULARY BUILDING / POETRY APPRECIATION / READING GOOD BOOKS / SILENT READING]. Text inside the black box in bottom right quadrant reads [TEXT / AND / WORKBOOK / Seventh Grade]. At the bottom is the publisher’s information in black text that reads [IROQUOIS ? PUBLISHING ? The book is divided into two parts, both with thirteen units covering topics such as reading, parts of speech, composition, writing, reading, speaking, grammar, spelling, and common errors. Also included are drills and a fillable sheet for [Books I Have Read This Year]. The book is two-hole punched through each page and both covers. The interior pages are also perforated near the spine. The book has 248 pages and is in mostly unused condition. Pages 80-81 have been partially severed along the perforation line but are still joined at the top. There are four, fully, detached pages: 11-12 (2011.52.1b), 13-14 (2011.52.1c), 15-16 (2011.52.1d), and 17-18 (2011.52.1e).

The pages are from [UNIT TWO, RECOGNIZING AND USING SENTENCES]. Printed at the top is an explanation of what is a sentence and provides several examples below. At the bottom of the page are fillable lines for [Name], [Class], and [Date]. Towards the bottom of page 11 and continuing on the top of page 12 is exercise I which includes 15 groups of words next to fillable lines. Each line has been filled in with pencil text with [NS] or [S]. Below exercise I on page 12 are exercises II-IV. These exercises are blank. The page is two-hole punched.

The pages are from Unit Two: [COMPLETE SUBJECT AND COMPLETE PREDICATE]. At the top of page 13 is an explanation of what is a subject and a predicate and then provides several examples highlighting both below. Some of the words have been underlined and double underlined with pencil marks. At the bottom of the page are fillable lines for [Name], [Class], and [Date]. On page 14 are exercises I-III. With the exception of underline marks on question 1 of exercise I, the page is blank. The page is two-hole punched.

The pages are from Unit Two: [SIMPLE SUBJECT AND SIMPLE PREDICATE]. At the top of page 15 is an explanation of simple subjects and simple predicates followed by exercises I and II. At the bottom of the page are fillable lines for [Name], [Class], and [Date]. Page 16 features [A TEST IN RECOGNIZING DIFFERENT PARTS OF A SENTENCE]. The test includes 24 sentences with fillable lines next to them for the test taker to record the simple subject and simple predicate. The page is two-hole punched.
