- Description
- The Architectural Heritage of the Piscataqua by John Mead Howells. The hardback book has a paper dustcover that is primarily dark blue and features a large black-and-white photograph of a large, white, three-gabled house with black shutters. Printed across the top half of the cover is white text that reads [THE / ARCHITECTURAL / HERITAGE OF THE / PISCATAQUA], with smaller, centered white text below that read [BY / JOHN MEAN HOWELLS]. Printed over the bottom of the photograph is black text that reads [HOUSE AND GARDENS OF THE / PORTSMOUTH DISTRICT / MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE]. The back cover features a large off-white map of the Portsmouth District titled [PORTSMOUTH DISTRICT AND THE PISCATAQUA RIVER WHICH FORMS / THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE]. The spine features the book title and additional text that reads [ARCHITECTURAL / 6136] printed in white text. The front and back covers of the book are cloth bound with a light blue fabric. The covers are both plain but the spine has printed black text that reads [HOWELLS] at the top of the spine, [THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE / OF THE PISCATAQUA] at the center, and [ARCHITECTURAL] at the bottom. The book has a sewn binding. There is a handwritten inscription in blue ink on the title page that reads [To Clayton Sinclair / From Mrs. John Howells]. The interior of the book has black type on white pages. It also features black-and-white maps, diagrams, and photos, as well as 300 plates. The book pages are unnumbered.
