- Description
- A hardback book titled, Poems by Lord Byron with Illustrations, by Byron and published by George Routledge and Sons. It is a cloth bound hardcover book with a sewn binding and gilded page edges. The green front cover of the embossed volume features a large, ornate, gold leaf rectangular box at the center. The shortened title is printed at the top of the box in black text that reads [BYRON] and [ILLUSTRATED] is printed in smaller, green relief text at the bottom. Between, is a panel of scrolled arabesque leaves and three five petal flowers. Above the box is an illustration of a gold leaf lyre. There is an illustration of a gold leaf flower with leafy stems in a black vase at the bottom of the box. The box is framed by black embossed bands of geometric shapes and vines. At the top of the spine is a gold leaf five-pointed star. The shortened title and the publisher, [ROUTLEDGE], are printed in black text in gold leaf bands on the spine. There is also an illustration of a black lyre at the center and a gold leaf five petal flower with leafy stems in a black vase at the bottom. The back of the book is green with an embossed square framing flowers and leaves at the center. The interior of the book has black type on white pages. There is a thin, red decorative border around all of the pages. The pastedowns and free endpapers are deep mauve. In the top right corner of the front free endpaper is a faded black ink, handwritten inscription that reads [Mrs T.F. Chapin]. The book features dozens of poems, a biography of Byron, extracts from Don Juan, and two printed, black-and-white illustrations of etchings. The book has 720 pages.
