- A hardcover book titled, The Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser. With Memoir, Notes, and Glossary, by Edmund Spenser and published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company. It is a cloth bound hardcover book with a sewn binding. The book is green with black text and design elements. The shortened title, [SPENSER’S / POEMS], is embossed with black ink at the top third of the front cover, inside a black rectangular frame. The word [POEMS] is bookended with small rosettes. Above the title, and at the bottom of the front cover, are illustrated bands of black embossed and green relief heart-shaped knots with alternating elongated relief spades. In the bottom left quadrant of the front cover, is a black embossed illustration of a spiraled vine with terminates in a stylized lute. At the top and bottom of the spine, the shortened title, [SPENSER’S / POEMS], and the publisher’s information, [T.Y. CROWELL], are printed in green relief inside gilded bands. The title words are divided by a Greek meander and framed top and bottom by a band of black and gold leaf half-rosettes. There are also three black bands of encircled, black embossed and green relief fleur-de-lis at the top of the spine, below the title, and at the bottom. At the center of the spine is a black embossed stylized lute growing from a stem with elongated leaves, a rosette, and two half-rosettes. In the top right corner of the front flyleaf is a handwritten pencil inscription that reads [.45]. The back cover of the book is plain. The interior of the book has black type on white pages with no illustrations. Contents include a [MEMOIR OF SPENSER], [A LETTER OF THE AUTHOR TO SIR WALTER RALIEGH], [VERSES TO THE AUTHOR OF THE FAERY QUEEN], [SONNENTS ADDRESSED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS FRIENDS AND PATRONS], Books I-VII of [THE FAERY QUEEN], [THE SHEPHARD’S CALENDAR], [COMPLAINTS], and [MISCELLANEOUS POEMS]. The book has 715 pages.
