Description
2011.12.8a-f: A Globe-Wernicke barrister style bookcase from the Rock Rest Tourist home. The sectional bookcase is comprised of six-sectional pieces: a cornice top, four shelves, and a base with drawer at the bottom. The bookcase is Globe-Wernicke Grade No. 598, with a mahogany, medium dark finish, brushed brass trimmings and center doorknobs.
2011.12.8a: The cornice top from a Globe-Wernicke barrister style bookcase from the Rock Rest Tourist home. The top is narrow and features a scrolled cap above cove molding and a squared listel. The bottom left and right sides and front corners feature brushed brass strip locking mechanisms that cover the joints between this top section and the shelf section below. Nailed to each side of the underside of the cornice are two natural wood support bars that are designed to interlock with the single support bar of the shelf section below. The front support bar has a single flute down the center. Nailed to the center of the plain, back support bar, is a light brown label with a black double line frame with interior black text of varying sizes and fonts that read [MANUFACTURED BY / The Globe-Wernicke Co. / CINCINNATI, / PATENTED.[underlined]]. Printed at the bottom on the left is the [SIZE] above [D=Ex. Top]. On the right is the text [GRADE] above the style number [598]. Handwritten text in white chalk in one corner of the back support bar reads [8[?]01]. The back of the cornice is plain mahogany stained. Just left of center is a black tag with printed gold text that reads [MARGESON BROTHERS / HOME OUTFITTERS / THE QUALITY STORE / 19-21 VAUGHAN ST / PORTSMOUTH, N.H.].
2011.12.8b: A D-8 1/2 shelf section from a Globe-Wernicke barrister style bookcase from the Rock Rest Tourist home. The shelf is attached at the top of the case, below the cornice (2011.12.8a). This mahogany finished shelf section is rectangular in shape and features a plain glass paneled door that can be lifted by a small, brass, center knob to access the shelf. Once lifted, the door can be pushed back into the shelf on door slides. The interior wood is slightly lighter in color with a dark brown, horizontal grain. Adhered to the center, bottom interior back of the case is a brown label with a black frame with interior black text of varying sizes and fonts that read [MANUFACTURED BY / The Globe-Wernicke Co. / CINCINNATI, O. / BRANCHES OR AGENCIES EVERYWHERE. / PATENTED.[underlined]]. Printed at the bottom on the left is the [SIZE] above [D-8 1/2]. On the right is the text [GRADE] above the style number [598]. The label is partially torn in the bottom right corner. Across the top is a natural wood support bar that is nailed to the center of the shelf section. Just below is the bookcase equalizer, with two metal cross braces that are scissored at the center and attached to the bookcase door which allows it to slide back into the section. Nailed to the underside of the cornice are a medium tone, finished wood front support bar and a natural wood back support bar that are designed to interlock with the single support bar of the shelf section below. The front support bar has a single flute down the center. On the sides of the shelf section, at the bottom, are brushed brass strip locking mechanisms that cover the joints between this shelf section and the shelf section below. 2011.12.8f: The drawer base section from a Globe-Wernicke barrister style bookcase from the Rock Rest Tourist home. This mahogany finished base section is narrow and features a long, wooden drawer. The drawer is fully removable and has two, round brass drawer pulls. The cove molded drawer front is slightly concave with a curved lip at the top, shaped to nestle within the scrolled sides of the base. Across the top of the base section is a natural wood support bar that is nailed to the center of the shelf section. At the top of the base, nailed to the center support, is a brown label with a black double line frame with interior black text of varying sizes and fonts that read [MANUFACTURED BY / The Globe-Wernicke Co. / CINCINNATI, / PATENTED.[underlined]]. Printed at the bottom on the left is the [SIZE] above [D-Ex DWT. Base]. On the right is the text [GRADE] above the style number [598]. On the right side of the center support bar is a black tag with printed gold text that reads [MARGESON BROTHERS / HOME OUTFITTERS / THE QUALITY STORE / 19-21 VAUGHAN ST / PORTSMOUTH, N.H.]. The sides are plain mahogany as is the back of the base section. The bottom of the base section has a rectangular cutout at center. The drawer has a single compartment and interior wood is slightly lighter that the exterior in color with a dark brown, horizontal grain. The drawer front is attached to the rest of the drawer with dovetail joints. The sides, back, and underside of the drawers are natural wood.
