Councilwoman At-Large Hilda Mason of the D.C. Statehood Party in her office in the District Building. Ms. Mason worked extensively in the D.C. public school system as a teacher, counselor, supervising instructor, and assistant principal. In 1972 she was elected to represent Ward Four on the D.C. Board of Education where she served until 1977. She also founded the Ward Four Council on Education during that time. On April 2, 1977, Ms. Mason was appointed to the city council to fill the vacancy left by the death of Julius W. Hobson. When she completed that term in 1978, she was elected to serve a full term of her own. Since that time, she has been elected to three other terms on the Council and has served as Chairperson of the Committee on Education and Libraries since 1981. I could count on seeing her in at least six different places on the weekends when I was out working and taking photographs. She always says she’s everybody’s grandmother. July 25, 1983.
