Description
A small, center-stitched bound booklet produced by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point listing officers and cadets of the Academy in 1887, including three African American cadets: John Hanks Alexander, Charles Young, and Henry Wilson Holloway.
The booklet is printed in black ink on off-white paper with a tan colored wrapper. The front cover is printed in black decorative text reading [OFFICIAL REGISTER / OF THE / Officers and Cadets / OF THE / U.S. MILITARY ACADEMY, / West Point, N.Y. / JUNE, 1887]. The inside front cover has a quote from Winfield Scott.
The booklet begins with a listing of the "Board of Visitors," followed by officers and the academic staff. Next is a listing of cadets by class according to year of study and "arranged in Order of Merit in their Respective Classes." John Alexander is found at number 32 in the First Class on page 10 and Charles Young is listed at number 50 in the Third Class on page 15. The next section is a listing of cadets admitted in September 1886 (including Henry Wilson Holloway on page 19) and those admitted in June 1887. This is followed by a section titled "General Merit Roll of the Graduating Class," with Alexander listed on page 25. Then follows a list of "Distinguished Cadets," and a list of "Casualties" with those cadets who resigned, were discharged or dismissed, or died. On page 29 is a listing of "Battalion Organizations" with Charles Young identified as a Captain. The final two sections are a listing of the course of study and text books used and a section on entrance requirements. There are 40 pages total.
