Description
An issue of Ebony Magazine from October 1949. The cover features Lena Horne and Duke Ellington against an orange background. Ellington, in a grey suit, embraces Horne, who wears a burgundy dress with white polka dots. At top left is the [EBONY] title in white text against a red background with [A JOHNSON PUBLICATION] just below it. At top right [AMERICA'S / MOST-MARRIED / NEGROES]. At bottom left [OCTOBER 1949 30c].
The interior contents include articles on "Dixie lawmakers spend record funds on state schools," Horne and Ellington, a choir featured in films, Smalls Paradise nightclub in Harlem, the dancer Katherine Dunham, an annual Baptist convention, the cover story "Most-Married Negroes," politics in Chicago, and "Negroes in Pro Football." There are also numerous advertisements including a Pepsi Cola campaign featuring Talladega College. The back cover features an advertisement for Schenley whiskey.
