- A midwife permit issued to Amanda Carter and dated November 2, 1955. The permit is signed by the local health department director "H.E. Jen[illegible]" the local registrar "Bessie B. Irving" and the Bureau of Maternal & Child Health director "L.L.Sh[illegible]." The permit begins "This is to certify that Amanda Carter/ residing at Route #3, Farmville, Virginia, having been recommended by doctors/ A.G. Rawlins." A small printed representation of the Seal of Virginia appears on the lower left corner. On the reverse are printed seven rules and two laws midwives are obligated to follow.
