Vernon O. Nicolls and Edith Gloria Harris were married on 20 April 1941 in New York, NY. A year later, on 30 April 1942, Vernon enlisted as a Private in the Army at Fort Jay on Governor's Island during World War II. After graduating from Officer Candidate School, Lieutenant Nicolls served in Italy with the 758th Tank Battalion, the Army's first African American armored unit. After the war, Vernon and Edith lived in the Bronx, NY, before eventually moving to Baltimore, MD.
Description
A black-and-white photograph of Lieutenant Vernon O. Nicolls and his wife, Edith Nicolls, standing in front of a brick house beneath a window. Another window is partially visible on the right and a glass door is partially visible on the left of the couple. Neither Vernon Nicolls, nor his wife, are looking at the viewer. They are standing angled towards each other. Vernon Nicolls is wearing a light and dark checkered, button down shirt and dark pants. Edith Nicolls is pictured wearing a light colored blouse, overcoat, and dark shoes. There is an inscription in pencil on the verso that reads, [16] on the top left corner of the photograph.
