- Edith Gloria Harris was born in 1914 in Baltimore, MD. She married Vernon O. Nicolls on 20 April 1941 in New York, NY. A year later, on 30 April 1942, Vernon enlisted as a Private in the Army at Fort Jay on Governor's Island during World War II. After graduating from Officer Candidate School, Lieutenant Nicolls served in Italy with the 758th Tank Battalion, the Army's first African American armored unit. After the war, Vernon and Edith lived in the Bronx, NY, before eventually moving to Baltimore.

- A black-and-white photograph of Edith Nicolls, wife of Lt. Vernon O. Nicolls, standing in front of a brick house beneath a window. Another window is partially visible on the right and a glass door is partially visible on the left of the couple. Edith Nicolls is pictured facing the viewer with her eyes closed. She is wearing a light colored overcoat and dark shoes. There is an inscription in pencil on the verso that reads, [16] on the top left corner of the photograph.
