SC – Cuckolds Creek. Clearcutting of forested swamp in river deltas was extensive - total 156,000 acres. This plantation, Cockfield, was also owned by Nathaniel Hayward, the largest enslaver of his time, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. –Description from photographer, David Soliday.
Description
A digital scan of a low aerial photograph depicting a section of Cuckolds Creek flowing through Cockfield Plantation in Colleton County, South Carolina. Most of the image features flat, brown grasslands, with the exception of the creek which meanders in all directions, creating an amorphous, deep blue pattern in the landscape. A narrow strip of taller, greener trees follows the river’s path on either of its banks. In the top left, a patch of bright green vegetation is partially visible.
