Description
A Ku Klux Klan receipt booklet used by the Realm of New York Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Klan number 123. There are forty-six receipts filled in mostly via carbon copy transfer. The receipt booklet front and back covers are blank cardboard and the interior receipts are tan newsprint with red ink print. The text along the right edge of each receipt reads [OFFICIAL ORDER ON KLABEE]. Receipt text reads [______________ 19__ / To ____________________ Klabee / PAY TO THE ORDER OF ____________ / ________________________ DOLLARS / and charge the same to ________ Fund of Klan No. _____ / Realm of ___ Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. / Signed ______________ E.C. / ______________ Kligrapp / No._______ Klan No_______ Realm of ____]. On the top left corner of each receipt is an image of two hooded klansmen on rearing horses. An impression off a receipt in the booklet is visible on the interior back cover: Central Square 28 / Jay Codner/ Sam H. Venable / Three_____ 25/100 / genl 123 / N.Y. / Burton Avery / 123 N.Y.
Statement
Objects depicting symbols of hate or related to organized hate groups may be offensive and disturbing, but the NMAAHC aims to include them in the Collection to present and preserve the historical context in which they were created and used. Objects of this type provide an important historical record from which to study and evaluate history and culture.
