- Issue No. 3 Vol. IX of Niles' Weekly Register, Third series published in Baltimore, Maryland. Page 42 contains an account titled [THE HORRIBLE TRADE. Communication from a naval officer of rank, emplyed on the coast of Africa" about a slave ship.] The account describes the capture of the Brazilian brig Creole and its cargo of 309 enslaved Africans off the coast of West Africa. The author, unnamed, rails against the conditions of those enslaved persons on board and the Portuguese who are paid to suppress the slave trade and then do little to actually supress it.
