Description
This gelatin silver print depicts a black and white image of Ozie Powell being examined by doctors after being shot. Powell is laying down under a blanket while two male doctors examine his head. One doctor stands behind him with his head bent down and has both hands on Powell's head. He has a stethescope around his neck. The other doctor stands next to him and is looking down at the wound. The words [Scotsboro case] are handwritten in cursive on the back of the photograph. There is a copyright stamp on the back of the photograph. The piece of paper glued to the pack of the photograph contains an image caption that reads [WATCH YOUR CREDIT INTERNATIONAL CHICAGO. / 14909 1-25-35. / SCOTTSBORO NEGRO SHOT AFTER STABBING GUARD. / DECATUR, ALA., OZIE POWELL, ONE OF THE NINE / SCOTTSBORO NEGROES IS PICTURED IN HILLMAN / HOSPITAL AS SURGEONS PROBED FOR TWO BULLETS / FIRED INTO HIS SCULL BY SHERIFF J. STREET / SANDLIN. THE BULLETS WERE REMOVED AND OZIE WAS RESTING EASY. POWELL WAS SHOT AFTER HE STABBED / EDWARD BLALOCK, A DEPUTY SHERIFF, WHILE MAKING / AN ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE. THE STABBING TOOK PLACE / IN THE AUTOMOBILE THAT WAS BRINGING HIM TO / JEFFERSON COUNTY JAIL IN BIRMINGHAM.
