Description
A silver gelatin print depicting a black-and-white image of a man participating in the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. The man, depicted center with his head turned towards his proper right shoulder, is in a large crowd of men and women, marching in front of the Washington Monument. He is wearing a vest-shaped bib attached to the front of his jacket. The bib is decorated with an American flag theme, with stripes running vertically from his chest to the bottom of the bib below three (3) five (5) pointed stars. Taped to the inside of each star are single, block text words that read: [JOBS], [HOUSING], and [EDUCATION]. On the proper left shoulder of the bib is a white circle with a block text words, taped to the center of the circle, that read [FREEDOM / NOW]. He also has two (2) partially obscured pinback buttons attached to the left breast of his jacket.
On the verso of the image are handwritten inscriptions that provide publication information, the image date, event information, location, image number, the name of the printer, and the signature of the donor. There is also the photographer’s label as well as a stamp mark in black ink in the bottom right corner of the verso.
