Description
A silver gelatin print depicting a black-and-white image of applauding participants gathered around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool during the March on Washington, August 28, 1963. In the foreground, is a group of participants are seated around a picnic blanket spread on the ground. Two (2) women, centrally depicted in the foreground, are looking towards the right edge of the image, clapping their hands. On the corner of the picnic blanket is a piece of paper with a central graphic depicting three (3) silhouettes of people holding hands with the text [We Shall] and [Overcome] printed above and below the graphic. Behind the seated participants is a large crowd of participants standing along the edges of the reflecting pool. The Washington Monument is in the distant background.
On the verso of the image are handwritten inscriptions that provide publication information, image date, event information, location, image number, the name of the printer, and the signature of the donor. There is also the photographer’s label as well as a stamp mark in black ink in the bottom right corner of the verso.
