Description
A silver gelatin print depicting a black-and-white image of man and a woman seated on the grass next to a protest sign during the twentieth anniversary of the March on Washington, August 27, 1983. The woman is centrally depicted in the foreground in profile, seated in the grass with her proper right hand tucked under her chin. She is wearing a short sleeve tee shirt and a baseball cap that has the text [MARTIN L[UTHER] / KING] printed on the crown. Behind her is a man in a white short-sleeve shirt with dark, vertical stripes. He is seated on the grass with his arms resting on his knees. On the left side of the image is a large protest sign, sitting in the grass, that features a large graphic of Martin Luther King, Jr. and text in the bottom left corner that reads [“If a man hasn’t found / something he will die for, / he isn’t fit to live.”] The black border around the edge of the graphic has white text that reads [ATLANTA · BIRMINGHAM · DALLAS · DETROIT · JACKSON · LITTLE ROC[K] / LOS ANGELES · MEMPHIS · MONTGOMERY · MIAMI · / NEW ORLEANS · NEW YORK · RICHMOND · SELMA · WASHINGTON · D.C.] / Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 19[29] – 196[8] In Memoriam].
On the verso of the image are handwritten inscriptions that provide the image date, event information, location, image number, the name of the printer, and the signature of the donor. There are also two (2) stamp marks in black ink in the bottom right corner of the verso.
